Due to its magnetic dipole moment, the neutron&lt;br /&gt;
can be affected by a variation of the local magnetic field &lt;br /&gt;
inside materials. This magnetic field most often originates from&lt;br /&gt;
atomic magnetic moments. &lt;br /&gt;
To simplify the presentation, we here consider only magnetic&lt;br /&gt;
fields arising from the spins of electrons in unpaired atomic orbitals.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A more complete treatment of magnetic neutron scattering theory&lt;br /&gt;
is given in a number of textbooks, &lt;br /&gt;
e.g.~the one by Marshall and Lovesey&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;marshall&amp;quot;&amp;gt;W. Marshall and S.W. Lovesey. &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Theory of Thermal Neutron Scattering&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (Oxford, 1971)&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The study of the orientation of magnetic moments in materials is a rich and diverse field,&lt;br /&gt;
in which neutron scattering is a key technique. &lt;br /&gt;
We will in this chapter turn to the study of magnetic structures by magnetic neutron diffraction, &lt;br /&gt;
while [[Inelastic magnetic scattering]] is devoted to the treatment of&lt;br /&gt;
inelastic magnetic scattering, e.g. from magnetic excitations.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Magnetic scattering can also be performed with spin-polarised neutrons,&lt;br /&gt;
where additional information on magnetic properties can be obtained.&lt;br /&gt;
This will be covered by a later version of these notes.&lt;br /&gt;
