In crystalline solids, the atoms are organised in a regular pattern. We will here show how the interference between neutrons scattered elastically from atoms in a crystal leads to scattering only at particular &amp;quot;non-small&amp;quot; values of \(\bf q\).  This type of scattering is known as &amp;#039;&amp;#039;diffraction&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and is governed by the celebrated Bragg law.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
By analyzing diffraction patterns from powders (a sample of randomly oriented \(\mu\)m- or nm-sized crystallites) or single crystals, it is possible to determine the crystal structure, lattice parameters, and atomic positions in crystalline materials. Neutron diffraction on powders and single crystals can be used also to determine magnetic structures, as briefly described on the page [[Magnetic neutron scattering]]&amp;lt;!--in chapter~\ref{ch:magnetic}--&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
